Some people worship you from afar you know?” To this, Merrill smirks back at her, saying that: The first one (the friendly/diplomat response) has Hawke say that she’s not as perfect as Merrill thinks she is. But if she came to see Hawke despite feeling this way, then there’s a genuine part of her that thinks (or hopes in her case) that she’s not the only one feeling this way. The look on her face is filled with disappointment and sadness, almost like she knows exactly what Hawke’s going to say. Surely someone like Hawke deserves better than her, surely she’s the only one feeling this way. Merrill is afraid that she’ll be rejected, that she’s not good enough for her. She tries to avoid Hawke’s gaze, looking at the ground or anywhere else than directly gazing into her eyes. Her low self esteem and confidence are once again the best of her, even during such a private and emotional moment between the two. It’s very clear that Merrill holds Hawke to very high regards. The camera then starts to slowly zoom in and the music in the backgrounds stops as Merrill continue to talk, explaining how she wishes that she was more like Marian: It’s clear that leaving the Dalish was painful decision for her, but she’s quick to turn it into something positive, as thanks to that, she met Hawke. Merrill takes long pauses during her speech here (like between ‘my people and I never would have). Clearly she’s used to Merrill and her antics by now, but instead of finding it irritating as Merrill believes her insecurities to be, she’s quick to shrug it off and move on.Īfter being reassured, Merrill is quick to move on to the real reason she’s there: to confess her feelings to Hawke.

“Don’t second-guess yourself.”, all with a smile on her face. Hawke respond by supporting her decision, saying that what she’s feeling is nothing more than homesickness, but only that, she also reassures Merrill that she should trust herself and her decisions she’s made more:

Maybe everything she did, every decisions she’s made of late have all been wrong? For someone who was so certain that it’s for the best for her to leave, Merill is suddenly very doubtful of herself. Merrill then tells that she’s been feeling doubtful about her departure. Also pay notice to her hand gesture, as they also signal that she’s hesitant and nervous. Even though she’s in a company of the one person she seems to trust the most, she’s nervous and distant, staying surprisingly far away from Hawke. The way Merrill says this is important, because once again she’s hesitating. She tells Hawke that she’s been unable to think what has happened as of late. Merrill is quick to explain what’s on her mind. Seeing Merrill be her typical self is clearly something she’s grown fond of. The way Hawke says this is also important, because despite someone just entering her home unannounced and out of blue, she simply smiles back at Merrill and even laughs a little. Hawke responds back with her usual witty remark, stating that she likes it when Merrill is flustered. (I’m going to use mostly sarcastic Hawke here for responses) This scene hasn’t even lasted for more than few seconds at this point, but it’s very clear that Merrill is extremely nervous here. Merrill walks circles restlessly as she explains that she has been looking for Hawke all over Hightown, rambling so much that she even realizes it herself and stops. What follows seems to pay homage to how Merrill was first introduced, although taking it a bit further than that. It’s pretty clear that she has been searching for her for a while and she’s stressed/nervous about something. The way she says “Oh, thank goodness you’re here!” tells that much, because she sounds very relieved. So everything starts off with Merrill entering Hawke’s mansion. So without a further ado, let’s get started: I’ve been meaning to make an analysis of this scene for quite a while, because I think that there are a lot of layers here that some people might have missed on their playthrough or otherwise.
